Family First: Premature Twins

We begin a series of stories on babies born before they're ready.
The March of Dimes has been saving their lives for decades and they need your help.

Mother of twins, Robyn Ophime, hopes her story will motivate you to walk.

" The pregnancy went really well ... I didn't have a lot of morning sickness... lost a lot of weight which was actually kind of funny."

Robyn was due with her first child in August.
Half way through the pregnancy, she found out she was due with two!

" She kinda put the gel on and kinda did this to look and I'm like wait a minute... I've never been in for an ultrasound but that looks like too many bodies!"

It turned out to be the bodies of these two beautiful, energetic, soon-to-be two-year-olds.
But Brianna and J-D's story didn't start out so happy.

" I'm sitting there in my wheelchair and my water broke. "

Robyn was in a wheelchair at 30 weeks because of early contractions.
When her water broke, there was nothing more doctors could do other than hope for the best. And it all happened terribly fast.

"Neither one of them was breathing. I didn't get to see either one of them. They took them right away."

Brianna and J-D were born just an hour apart. Brianna smaller than her brother. Mom and Dad were thankful for every day.

"It's very scary when they're in the NICU and everybody's telling you this is just what preemies do and you're like yes but these are my first kids and I don't know so when those alarms go off you're still freaking out. And they're like don't touch them, they need to come out of it on their own! You're going "silent scream"

They were in the hospital for several weeks but once home they recovered better than most.

"They've been remarkably healthy ever since but we had a very rough beginning."

Robyn was motivated by what she saw the experts *do to keep her two beautiful children alive.
Both at St. Mary's Hospital.... and at the March of Dimes.

" Things you don't know about until you get there. I spent a lot of time in the NICU and there's tons of literature out there and you're reading through all of this going 'oh this was them?'

She felt so thankful, she started participating in the march of dimes walk through her group, Madison area moms of multiples. Last year, they raised more than four thousand dollars.
This year the goal is six thousand and the motivation is with her every day.

And now is your chance to walk. Just head to and click on newslinks. There we've posted a link to the NBC-15 team for the March of Dimes walk on Saturday, May 2ND. We hope to see you there!
