As we approach this year's March of Dimes walk... every week we'll introduce you to a *family* that inspires us all to lace up!
And with Easter just around the corner, we knew the Gee family would do just that.
"JACKIE Finally we realized oh my god she's in labor. "
Alex and Jackie Gee *unexpectedly* rushed to St. Mary's Hospital on Thanksgiving, 1996. But their daughter was only 24 weeks in utero... not due until March!
" ALEX It felt like Deja vu because two previous daughters were born very early and only lived for a few minutes after birth "
Alex, pastor of Fountain of Life Church on Madison's South side, was terrified. But his power of prayer was in full strength for five long days before Lexi was born at one pound eight ounces.
" ALEX Her umbilical cord was tied in a knot and she had abrupted so the placenta came out. Lexi wasn't moving, wasn't breathing and they thought she might have brain damage."
Then, Alex met his daughter.
"ALEX When I saw her eyes open, I thought, she's going to live... this baby's going to live. "
And she was a fighter one of the healthiest, at that size, the staff at St. Mary's had ever seen! 116 days later, she came home.
" ALEX: when it was time for Lexi to go home, you know some of the meds given to Lexi were developed by March of Dimes would you guys mind walking with us and we said we're there, tell us when and where and we're there. "
The shots given to develop Lexi's lungs before she was born are a March of Dimes discovery, among others. Which is why the Gee family walks for Lexi who is *thriving* both physically and developmentally every year.
"JACKIE .... it's just a gift that March of Dimes gives us and to believe and to hold on and to trust that the wonderful ability that God has given the doctors and hospitals and medicine is incredible!"
"LEXI I wanted to say don't give up and hold on just to see what's going to happen. "
We'd love to have you at this year's March for Babies. The walk is Saturday May second at 9:30am! To join team 15, please head to NBC 15 dot com and click on "community" to sign up.
