Family First: Eating Healthy on a Budget

A dietitian with Dean Health wants to help your family stay healthy on a budget. First, don't think it's going to be hard on your wallet to stock up on produce. It can be very affordable.

"Typically frozen vegetables and fruits work just as well as fresh and they actually tend to maintain some of their vitamin and mineral status too which is really nice."

She also recommends buying store brands and trying to stick to what's in season. Keep in mind apples, bananas and oranges tend to be pretty good all year round. Meat is another food that most people think is expensive but doesn't have to be.

"You can buy bulk chicken in frozen bags. You can maybe look for a meat that's going to expire in a couple of days and they'll usually mark it down a couple of dollars. "

She suggests heading to the farmers market, too not just for fruits and veggies but lean, inexpensive fish and meat.

Melissa from Dean also recommends planting a garden. Things like strawberries, which you can freeze and eat all winter, come back every year which saves a ton of money!
