Family First: March of Dimes

Every Thursday we've been introducing you to families supported by the March of Dimes to get you to support the big walk coming up this weekend.
Today we head straight to the source the neo-natal intensive care at St. Mary's. Meet one-week-old Samuel. His Mom, Jody, had him seven weeks early... despite an otherwise healthy pregnancy.

" It was very terrifying. I was immediately in tears. It was a very, very difficult situation. "

During labor, which the staff at St. Mary's tried to stop, parents Dennis and Jody were able to hear their son's heart-beat. They knew he was holding up but not what was next.

"All different emotions are going on. Is Jody going to be ok, is the baby going to be ok?"

Thanks to the March of Dimes, one of the shots Jody got to develop the baby's lungs did help.

" While the labor process was going on, they actually sent someone from the NICU down to talk to us to tell us this is what happens when you have a premature baby, this is what we do to take care of it.. "

48 hours later, Samuel was born at five pounds seven ounces.

" He actually does really well eating, he's actually being tube fed right now. But he does have spells where he just stops breathing. "

Jody and Dennis hope to take Samuel home by his due date in early June. Before this happened to them Jody was a regular volunteer at the March of Dimes walk. Since she can't be there this year telling her baby's story is her way of giving back.

" Knowing him in such a short period of time we can't imagine how we ever lived our life without him.. "
