Did you know that babies, from day one, are hard-wired to understand music? And there is a connection between that and their ability to understand things like math, language, you name it. That's the focus of one local music class that is much more than just a class.
" Let's say there was a Broadway show that you absolutely loved and then you got to act in it too. I mean you loved the music and you hear it every day and then you also get to act in it. "
12 years ago, Jo Simons got interested in children and music when her daughter had twins. She was so fascinated by the impact of music she started the local franchise of Musical Tots - Music Together.
" I create a class around a CD with 35 songs that they're listening to at home and in the car. And we then act them out in class. It's something about this constant re-enforcement .. it's not just a half an hour every other day at school. "
Beginning at 3 months, kids in Musical Tots class learn everything from rhythm chants and nursery rhymes to world songs in other languages.
" When they're three they're read to graduate but they are singing on pitch and keeping a steady pitch plus it brings out their natural love of music which is all the basics they'll need the rest of their lives. "
And very importantly, it's the kind of music parents say they too, can enjoy.
" It's not like they're listening to Barney I love you every five minutes."
Jo offers Musical Tots- Music Together classes at three locations.
