Family First: Bug Spray for Kids

Print

It seems every parent you run into has a different opinion about what kind of bug spray is safe for their kids. So we checked with the experts at Web MD leading up to this buggy summer season.

So how do you weigh the risks? Even the experts say it's tough because of the risk of West Nile and just plain discomfort with itching.
It's important to point out that bug sprays with DEET have been deemed safe by the environmental protection agency. But there are also natural bug killers that actually work.

Starting with soy-based products. Bite Blocker for Kids wins the prize for most effective alternative to DEET. It gave about an hour and a half of protection. Also, oil of lemon eucalyptus is recommended by the CDC.

It may also work well against ticks... but should *not* be used in kids under three. Unfortunately, citronella like in the candles and peppermint oil have not proven to be particularly effective same goes for those bug zappers.
