Family First: Nicki's Diapers

Posted: Friday, September 25, 2009 --- 4:00 a.m.

In today's Family First, we introduce you to a fabulous local business that helps families and the environment.

It turns out the number of parents looking for cloth diapers is growing, and so is one mom's great idea.

When Nicki Maynard had her son 6 years ago, she had trouble finding cloth diapers.

She and her husband liked the idea of using them to save money and take it easy on the environment.

"Cloth diapers aren't what they used to be. you don't use pins anymore... there are ones that look just like disposables except you wash them. They're trim, you can't tell that you have cloth on. "

So they started an online business, Nicki's Diapers, that's been a huge success.

They now have a 6,000 square foot store in New Glarus and this new location full of fun stuff in Madison.

"They're adorable, too, it's one of those things. It's becoming a trendy thing. when I started 6-7 years ago it wasn't so trendy and now it's becoming trendy and people are doing it.."

It can cost about $2,000 to use disposable diapers for two years and while the upfront cost of cloth can be a little more, it is no doubt less expensive.

Nicki, whose husband joined the business a few years ago, is also focusing quite a bit at this location on breast-feeding.

They carry many different nursing bras and have lactation consultants who offer free classes!

"They're just drop in, come nurse your baby. It's just to get comfortable nursing your baby in front of other people, to ask basic questions and they'll refer you on if you need to be seen by a doctor. "

Nicki's Diapers is having it's grand opening event this weekend.

They're open Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday from 12-4.

They are located on High Point Road just off of Old Sauk on Madison's west side.

Also, if you tell them you saw the story here, you get 10 percent off....plus they are giving away a $1,000 in products this weekend.

Also, coming soon at Nicki's they'll have a car seat expert there to help families decide what kind to buy, check on the installation, even figure out how to fit three seats in eco-friendly vehicles!
