Family First: Operation Gratitude

Posted Wednesday, October 28, 2009 --- 4:50 a.m.

In this morning's Family First... if you're like me, a pumpkin full of Halloween candy isn't just a concern because of your kids and a sugar overload or cavities... it's how much of it you might eat!

Well, a local dentist is buying it back from your kids ... and turning it into a gift.

" Imagine going out on Halloween and coming back with this, that's what I'm talking about. "

It's called the Halloween Candy Buyback.
Basically - paying young people for their candy - a dollar a pound!

"It's ok we're not the halloween grinch ... we think that H is fun and can be enjoyed by young people. We understand they're going to eat their favorites but it's that half a shopping bag full of candy that's left over that they keep eating for the next week that scares us all, so here's a great answer."

And that candy gets shipped overseas to troops for what's called "Operation Gratitude."

"If the troops can have a moment of pleasure while they're out there putting their life on the line... that's what we're talking about. And they're excited to get this from young people back in the states and they think all the warm feelings of how they have about Halloween but they also know young people are out there collecting candy for them!"

Troops also use the candy to befriend children in Iraq and Afghanistan.
And that is a huge help in getting those kids to share critical information.

The Buyback is next Monday, November Second.

It's from 3-6pm in the lobby of Kammer Family Dental and Park bank, on Deming way.

Your kids get a dollar a pound for the candy.

And they get food and giveaways too like these fun toothbrushes.

If you can't make it that day, you can still drop off candy that will go to the troops overseas.
