Family First: Shopper Stopper

Posted: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 --- 4:16 a.m.
REPORTER: Sarah Carlson

When my kids and their friends started playing with ads that kept landing in our driveway, some of my neighbors and I wondered why they were coming so frequently all of a sudden.

And some of us wanted to know how to stop the shopper stopper.

The shopper stopper is full of really good coupons for local businesses if you are the coupon type.

But if yours end up in the recycling bin after you pick them up, or if you don't want them to pile up, we wanted to know how to stop delivery if you're not cutting out the ads.

The number on the front easily led us to the circulation desk.

We learned that it's only supposed to come once a week and the ads are not supposed to be left in your gutter or lawn.

She also said you can help out your neighbors by collecting their addresses and letting them know you'd all like to cancel delivery.

When these first started landing in my driveway, I tried to ask the delivery person to stop but it didn't work. So these are the easy steps to stop delivery if you are looking to save paper and plastic when not using the coupons.

I just walked around my block and picked up 25 shopper stoppers from the gutter. I left the ones on peoples lawns and driveways alone. I would have picked up dozens more, but that was all I could carry. They are a blight on my neighborhood. I consider it legalized littering by capital newspapers.

I already called the circulation department 4 times - spoke twice to circulation, once to a "supervisor" and again to another "supervisor" who promised he'd even send a person to check to make sure I do not receive another one. Guess what?! Got another one today. Am going to investigate how to formally file a complaint with the Attorney General's office.

Calling their circulation department does not always work on the first try. I had to call 4 times. The problem (they told me) was that their contracted delivery people do not always check their emails. If that happens, ask to be placed on their "follow up" list after you request a suspension of delivery. A classic case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease.
