Family First: Car Seats

Chances are you already have your travel plans secured.

Maybe you're all packed up, too, we parents spend a lot of time figuring out what we can't forget.

But most of us don't realize we're traveling with car seats that aren't installed right.

At Smart Motors, they offer free car seat safety inspections any time.

They have nine people, like Roger Ingalls, who are certified to do it.

"We'd rather have you come in, be safe... than continue driving with a seat installed that might not be safe for your child."

It only takes about 15 minutes and they recommend you bring the child or children with you.

We had one of our NBC15 employees take his car in and there were three very common problems.

First, the whole seat wasn't in tight enough.

Second, the strap over the child's shoulder was twisted.

And third, the clip at the top of the seat wasn't tightened properly.

Finally, most parents haven't registered their car seat, not realizing why it's so important.

"You bring your manual and we open it for you for the first time, typically, and we make sure you send the registration card in b/c that's the card that you'll get recalls sent to you on."
