In our family first this morning, so many couples know the pain of trying to get pregnant and having months or years go by.

But more and more are turning to alternative medicine like acupuncture and becoming parents.

One local mom shares her story.

Kerry Hagen is 26 weeks pregnant.

Things have gone smooth and she knows she's having a little girl, named Jordan.

But Kerry and her husband had trouble getting to this point.

" It did get a little frustrating because you don't understand why. You expect when you make that decision that you're going to get pregnant right away. So it took a little while and it was hard to work through frustrations but I'm glad that I stuck with it. "

She's talking about sticking with acupuncture to help with fertility.

At group health cooperative's complimentary medicine department - they see plenty of women like Kerry.

" We've worked with the different fertility doctors in Madison and it's very common for them to mention acupuncture right at the first initial intake with their patients so we do see it quite often. "

Richard Oberg has been with this program five years and has seen it grow significantly.

He says a lot of women are nervous when they first start but then are just grateful that there's another option.

" A lot of times we see women who've been through everything ... just think they're not going to get pg and then they find out there is another alternative another chance for them.. "

And now that Kerry is more than half way through her pregnancy - she still comes to Richard for treatments.

She wants women to know that it helps with relaxation, stress and it's painless.

" To help get ready for birth and just to help you along so it's nice.. "

Interestingly, the acupuncturist we profiled from GHC also had trouble with fertility and ended up turning to acupuncture himself.

He's now a father and says his personal story really makes a difference working with patients.
