Family First: Lily's Lunch

Posted: Friday, March 5, 2010 --- 6:14 a.m.

In today's family first, an amazing and creative way that your neighbors and loved ones are benefiting from lunch at a construction site.

Once a month at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery's job site on campus - hundreds of workers eat lunch and donate to Lily's Fund in support of epilepsy research.

These guys have learned that more people suffer from epilepsy than breast cancer, but very little is known about it and very little funding is available to learn.

The cool thing is they are working in the very place where research and cures, we hope, will be created.

Every month, too, the Findorff Mortenson company matches what is raised.

Yesterday I had the honor of hanging out with the crowd and letting them know why what they do makes a difference.

In a short 45 minutes, they raise thousands of dollars.

And in less than a year, Lily's Fund has picked up nearly $25,000.

We also had the honor of stopping by the lab down the street where they are making amazing progress in learning more about seizures.

Professor Avtar Roopra's staff at UW has learned a tremendous amount about the connections between diseases like breast cancer and diabetes and seizures which impact millions.
