Family First: Cure Charlotte

Posted: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 --- 4:30 a.m.

In our family first today, we have great news about a little girl with cancer.

Charlotte Rufener is in remission.

She suffers from Neuroblastoma, the most common cancer in infants with an incidence rate of almost double that of leukemia, yet most people have never heard of it.

Neuroblastoma is a solid tumor cancer that originates in the nerve tissue of the neck, chest, stomach or pelvis, but most commonly in the adrenal gland.

Charlotte was diagnosed at four months!!!

It is very aggressive with almost 70% of children having it spread to other parts of the body at diagnosis. It's the third most common cancer in children under 18 but has one of the lowest survival rates.

There is no known cause or cure.

Charlotte's family has gone out of their way to meet people whose children are fighting the same cancer.

They even started a website to get more funding and research for neuroblastoma in particular.

There's a big benefit for Charlotte this Sunday from noon to six at Sugar River Lanes in Belleville.
