Family First: Soldiers

Posted: Friday, May 14, 2010 --- 4: 12 a.m.

In family first this morning, a population that is too often forgotten - our troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

They have lives and families here, but it's not always easy to adjust to being back.

The good news is the VA hospital was recently named a center of excellence for epilepsy, for all the troops coming home with traumatic brain injuries.

That means more long-term VIDEO EEG monitoring to figure out if they suffer from post traumatic stress disorder or epilepsy.

More troops are surviving blasts from IEDs because of body armour, so their heart and lungs are find, but not their brains.

40,000 suffered traumatic brain injuries last year - many mild, but many serious enough to break up families.

"There's a lot of family issues in terms of the dynamics changing. And making it more difficult. It has to be multi-disciplinary in terms of social workers and psychologists to try to get people to sort of re-integrate into their lives. "

We hope to bring you success stories as the funding here in Madison makes a difference for our troops headed home.
