Family First: Family First Aid

POSTED: Monday, July 11, 2011 --- 3:25 a.m.

Summer is a great time for families to be outside, but you want to make sure your family is ready for anything with the right first aid kit.

Doctors say you should carry more than just band-aids and spray.

Sunscreen and insect repellent are some of the most important items.

If you're outside for more than two hours, you want to reapply sunscreen.

Also, avoid times where the sun is at its most powerful between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Doctors say find a bug spray that has "DEET", 20% of it.

"One thing that's really important do to is just to stay well hydrated," says Dr. Mala Mathur from Group Health Cooperative.

"So, making sure that kids and adults are drinking lots of fluids, especially if they're going to be outdoors for prolonged periods of time.to avoid heat illness, heat stroke, that kind of thing".

Another thing to watch for outdoors, ticks. Doctors say if you're in the woods, stay in the middle of the paths. After you're done hiking, check your family's body for ticks. If you find any, use a tweezers to take them off. If anyone has any symptoms after 24 hours, you should call a doctor.
