MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Madison-area baby sitter has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for causing the death of an infant in her care.
Dane County Circuit Judge David Flanagan handed down the sentence Thursday during an emotional hearing in a packed courtroom.
A jury in April convicted 38-year-old Jennifer Hancock of first-degree reckless homicide in the death of 4-month-old Lincoln Wilber in 2007. An autopsy concluded the boy died from non-accidental abusive head trauma.
Hancock told the baby's parents Thursday that she didn't know why the boy died. She says she wished she could provide the answer.
Hancock was the only adult caring for the child in a Verona home when he suffered a head injury. Hancock told police she found him unresponsive when she checked on him.

Trial ordered in baby's death
VERONA, Wis. (AP) -- A day care provider from Verona has been ordered to stand trial in the death of a 4 month-old boy in her care.
37-year-old Jennifer Hancock is charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the September death of Lincoln Wilber. Hancock will also be tried on a charge of abusing the baby last August.
Doctor Barbara Knox testified in Dane County Circuit Court Wednesday that she examined the baby shortly after he was brought to University Hospital, when he had no pulse and was bleeding in his brain. Knox concluded that Lincoln had suffered abusive head injuries that happened shortly before the babysitter called 911.
A detective testified Hancock had no idea what happened to the child.

Charges have been filed against a Verona home daycare provider after an infant died in her care.
37-year-old Jennifer Hancock made her first court appearance Friday afternoon.
She faces three counts, including one count of first degree reckless homicide.
On Friday, September 7th, police responded to 637 Fairview Terrace in Verona. The caller reported a 4-month old boy unresponsive and not breathing. The child died days later, on Tuesday September 11th.
The child died as a result of non-accidental abusive head trauma. Hancock claimed in a statement to police that she found him unresponsive when she checked on him.
From the criminal complaint: Hancock reports that after doing the laundry exchange, she came back to check on L.W. and observed the nuk was out of his mouth, at which time she attempted to return it but L.W. exhaled somewhat strongly and it did not stay there. Hancock reports she observed that L.W.'s eyes were just little slits at this time and she attempted to shake him by placing her hand on his belly and shaking his belly. Hancock reported to Detective Petrie that L.W. looked "really weird." Hancock reports she went to pick him up and that he was very limp, at which point she panicked and ran to the phone and called 911.
Jennifer Hancock is also charged with two counts of child abuse for allegedly abusing the child on two prior occasions in August (8/24 and 8/27).

Randi, just because my opinions differ from yours, it does not make me ignorant. From MY experiences, in-home providers are NOT for my children!
I agree with L! Randi, from MY experiences, I will no longer have the in-home tv watching, 3 hour nap experiences!
Randi, like I said I am basing it on MY experiences. There is nothing ignorant about that. You base your opinion on YOUR experiences. Both have pros and cons so be a little more open minded.
