UPDATED Tuesday, August 26 --- 8:05pm

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Madison man will stand trial on a charge of killing his longtime girlfriend.

Dane County Circuit Court Judge Sarah O'Brien ordered Daniel Wright on Tuesday to stand trial in the death of Cassandra Mays after a preliminary hearing.

The 50-year-old Wright is accused of first-degree intentional homicide for the July 15 killing of Mays.

The 45-year-old woman was his girlfriend of five years but were in the process of breaking up.

Wright did not speak Tuesday as a not guilty plea was entered in his behalf.

Authorities say Wright stabbed Mays repeatedly with a knife during an argument a week after a witness said she heard Wright tell Mays he would kill her.

According to a news release from the City of Madison Police Department:

Detectives do not believe a third party was involved in yesterday's crime. This appears to have been a domestic fight between Daniel L. Wright, age 50, Madison, and the deceased. An autopsy is scheduled for this morning, and it will be up to the Dane County Coroner to establish a cause of death, and to release the victim's name. At this point Mr. Wright is in custody on outstanding warrants. He remains hospitalized, and investigators have not yet been able to speak with him. "There was a gentleman across the street arguing is what it seemed like in the building," says eyewitness, Danielle Reuter. "The next thing you know a man came running out covered in blood, throat sliced open, blood everywhere."

Witnesses to the murder investigation on West Badger Road Tuesday afternoon give a detailed description of just what they saw. Police have confirmed the death of one female while one male was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"I'm pretty shocked to have it in this neighborhood. I was thinking police were doing efforts to clean up this area and when stuff like this happens it seems like they're taking steps back."

"People could be doing better things with their life than what they are doing around here," says neighbor, Delores Green.

It's a sad day for neighbors in the area as the concern for their own safety comes into play.

"I just keep praying and hope for the best. You know?" says Delores' mother, Vanita Green. "That's all you can do. Just stay prayed up because we live in a world nowadays that's just bad."

Green was at work when it happened, leaving her 18 year old daughter Delores home alone at the time. Even though they've seen police quite frequently in this neighborhood, there's still reason for them to be cautious.

"Stay in the house and keep the doors locked at all times. That's all I can do. Mind your own business, you keep quiet and you stay out of other people's business and so as long as they doing that I'm kinda I'm hopeful that no one will target them."

Police have confirmed that the two victims were in a domestic relationship. They say there is no threat to the public or reason to believe this was a random crime.

An adult woman was found dead inside the residence. Her death is being treated as a homicide.

Bible thumpers crack me up with there "holier than thou" attitudes. Give it a rest. Besides, it's all based on FACTLESS information. Prove to me there is a God or that Jesus was actually put on this Earth to "save us all for our sins", then you can spout off about God! Otherwise, keep your religion to yourselves!!

oh good, another waste of flesh that is still sitting around using up oxygen and clean drinking water that could be given to some innocent child in some third world country without clean water. why don't we find some island somewhere that still believes in cannibalism, and send all our state winners like this guy there on an all expense one way trip for some sun, fun, and exercise to clear their heads out and free their spirits from all the darkness in their souls that drive them to this stuff. well, I know the natives would be willing to help clean their heads out, little salt, little pepper, and it comes in its own serving dish even! that way we could be supporting a foreign country from starving, clean out our state prisons, and reduce the crime rates! in other words, improve society for the decent folks living in it!

why are we even still discussing this guy? hasn't anyone from the dane county jail offered to take him water skiing on lake mendota? I'd say monona since it is closer to the new jail, but they're actually stilllooking for a decent person that ended up in there, and wewouldn't want anyone to find loser boy here too quickly (or at least until the muskies and northerns had some lunch of lips and nose!

Goldie- do you, or do you not, believe in God? how about the 10 commandments? you know, the 10 unforgivable sins of the Christian faith? there's one called "You shall not steal"! So, we have not passed judgement on someone who herself has abandoned herself to evil ways, in violation of the holy dictates of God Himself, commanding that all his children not steal. So, before you condemn us for judging, you yourself, sinning in pride, should not judge whom is judging here, for it was Cassandra herself who violated God's commandments, for which the bible says there will be no forgiveness, and her only judge awaited her above, not here, not now. How about "cast not the first stone" Goldie? By accusing us of judgement, you yourself are judging, and casting stones about amongst the faithful! May God have mercy on your soul Goldie, and forgive you, as I will, because it is the "Christian" thing to do

I'M RESPONDING TO SOME OF THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS WHICH WERE VERY INSENSITIVE. FIRST OF ALL, SHE WAS A DAUGHTER, MOTHER, AND A FRIEND. THE LIFE SHE LIVED DIDN'T CONSTITUTE WHO SHE WAS, AND IF YOU HAD MET HER YOU PROBABLY WOULD HAVE LIKED HER. SHE WAS A GOOD MOTHER AND A SWEET PERSON. SO, BEFORE YOU PASS JUDGEMENT LOOK AT YOUR SELF, AND ALWAYS REMEMBER WE ARE ALL GOD’S CHILDREN. I WILL PRAY FOR ALL OF YOU SOME OF YOUR COMMENTS WASN’T NECESSARY, IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY, DON’T SAY ANYTHING. I WILL PRAY FOR YOU. GOD BLESS YOU

neither 1 of them was perfect- he has 20 entries on ccap, and she has a couple too- 2 of them, a year apart, in 02-03 for retail theft over $2,500! one @ a walgreens on cot. grv. rd, and 1 @ a wal-mart! how the heck do you steal over $2K @ walgreens? furthermore, why was she w/ him? did she have a "thing" for the "bad boys"? if she was w/ him while he was doing all his illegal stuff, why didn't she bolt before now? I don't understand, then again, I never understand why people stay w/ criminals, abusers, druggies, alcoholics, mental cases, child molesters... but they do, then we read they're dead.

Brenda Location: Madison on Jul 17, 2008 at 06:57 PM: Brenda, this is Wisconsin...not the hamotins, etc. I am just saying, that if people took pride in their neighborhood, less crime would be happening. If oyu look in the hamptons, do they have 20 police calls for violent acts EACH WEEK? I do not think so! So, before you try to discredit my opinion, maybe you should read some police reports! The street I live on used to have a lot of idiots, and in turn, police calls. Then we started to watch out for each other, and now there is maybe 2 calls a year, and it is from people who live in different areas coming to steal and vadalize our things. But we do not just turn the other cheeck! We call the cops and give them the info they need to find the people responsible. Not just call so they find a body, then say we didnt see nuthin! Far as I am concerned, the law abidding citizens from that neighborhood need to take it back!!!!

Posted by: Carol Location: Madison on Jul 19, 2008 at 02:32 PM
You want simplistic answers? ok then. Otherwise, people live in desparation without support, stressed to the max, bingo. Doesn't matter where they are from. It's hard to get help for people with mental health problems. I hope you don't suggest mentally healthy, supported people kill each other...sheesh.

people are not making racist assumptions. people are stating the darn truth.yeah i am sure there are hard working people that live in this area, but we just dont see them. when you go through this neighborhood you dont see white guys with collered shirts on the street, you see african americans with lebron james jerseys. its not being prejudice or racist, its the truth!! some people just need to open their eyes. dont try to make this place seem like it is an okay place because it is NOT!

Posted by: To the SLUM LORDS! Location: madtown on Jul 17, 2008 at 11:43 PM
To all those landlords who thought they would just rent for the money and not protect them selves or the community You will now have to pay the stiff fines for your own ignorance because you would not take the time to check out the criminal history of your tenants so enoy the fines and all the criminal acts that have and will still to come from your stupity on letting the drugs and crimes to reoccur you should have pulled them up you would have seen that he was charged with a weapons charge amongst other felonies and misd. it wasnt to hard to tell who it could been i knew before it was released through reverse address check on the building and on ccap that it was him and her duh spend the time to research its FREE to protect and serve the community from harms way higher security officers as many as you feel needed obviously alot of them r needed at this and other areas in town beg borrow and steal like they do to get heads up in life!

Posted by: drug free and convictionless Location: wi on Jul 17, 2008 at 11:06 PM
In my own opinion they should have one slum area in madison and make all the convicted of misd. or felonies live in that specific area and have it ranch style apartments with seperate entrances for each apartment and have metal bars over the windows and have thier own little police enforcment on site paid by the judges because they keep giving these criminals chance after chance until its too late. They also need to have metal detectors at the entrances with sirens to go off to inform them there are weapons in trying to get in the area oh yeah lets throw in some drug sniffing dogs this way the innocent ones have a better judgement on who to let around there children and be not allowed to live in the non criminal residence they should have high rent so they remember what predicament they put them selves and others in. And should have to remain in that community for ten yrs after there convictions.

I find it incredible that Tony thinks murders happen in poor neighborhoods! The Hamptons? Betty Broderick? Just because it hasn't happened in Bishop's Bay does not mean it only happens in poor neighborhoods. Feel free to pick up a paper!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 05:46 PM
I always suspected people in Madison only pretended to be progressive, and after reading these posts I am absolutely convinced. I am seeing a lot of racist assumptions about the people that live in the Badger Rd. area. Not everyone that lives in that neighborhood supports criminal activity, lets their children run loose, or is on welfare. There are plenty of hard working people. It is really upsetting to know that you all are judging the people in this neighborhood based solely on where they live.

I have worked on Park st for the last 8 years.Over the last year, this has become an unsafe area to be in. I used to be able to walk on my lunch hour. The last time i did a weird man invited me into the arbouretum with him..I am sad at the downfall of this area. I hope the city will clean it up before something else happens.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 03:14 PM
The landlords can't raise the rent. I am a landlord and if I raised the rent too high, I would not be able to make the payments or repairs. The landlords are going through hell every day. Most of them do not own drug houses. They have to try to attract good tenants next to the drug houses. What about the mom and pop who have owned the rental house for 30 years and it is their retirement? Most of the landlords are trying to improve things but the tenants are making it hell for them. And the tenants are the one's crying about the conditions. So then they trash the place and say, "I can't pay for the damages because I lost my job cause I was doing drugs in the parking lot. Oops. Did I say too much?"

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Don't people usually come from Milwaukee and then Chicago? Thats the impression I always had.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: madison on Jul 17, 2008 at 01:57 PM
here is a simple solution for these "troubled areas". jack up the rent and these losers wouldn't be able to pay. then they could all go run back to chicago. sounds harsh, but it is the truth isnt it?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 01:27 PM
Police all over this nation have given their lives to help losers who create their own problems. You people made the mess, you clean it up. Teach your children a trade, punish them when they steal, run the druggies out of town. Any one of you can go to the police anonymously and give incriminating information that would lead to the arrest of people committing crimes. Instead, you dial 911 and cry about some loser all the while not telling the whole truth. Stand up for yourselves. The cost of rent is just as high there as anywhere else. Quit making excuses. CLEAN THE PLACE UP!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 01:07 PM
Why should the police risk their lives for people who don't even care enough to watch their kids or keep druggies and trash out of their house? For every 1 person who calls the cops, there are 10 who cover up for the looser and feel sorry for them.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 12:35 PM
The reason why the mpd does not respond is because when they get there, "Nobody saw nothin'." The parents of the gang kids need to call, identify themselves and their kids. The police need names. They need evidence. If you people won't help yourselves, how can they help you?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 12:35 PM
This neighborhood is crap. the woman that sell their bodies on the corners and up and down the street, I thought that was illegal? I couldn't get away with that in my neighborhood. There is no good way to make it better. when I used to hang out on broadway& simpson it was the same crap they moved alot of them out and look they ended up on Alied or on Badger road. none of those areas are safe. its too bad and it is a shame for the city of madison to have so many bad neighborhoods.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 12:28 PM
so was it the guy that came out all bloody or is there a 3rd party that did it?

Posted by: anon Location: madison on Jul 17, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Anonymous 09:12 AM OMG you're so right. I am the one who lives in this neighborhood that posted earlier. We do have a community watch group & walk the streets. We're only a small portion of this neighborhood though. As far as the police not getting into those areas, they need to. The crime is horrible and to not have the police handle the calls we do make isn't right. We try by using the power we have & that's our local law enforcement. I think the landlords, the police, & the adlers need to be held accountable for their areas, step up & face the issue with the rest of us. I know all of my neighbors are affraid to even drive up the street at night in fear that we will be attacked or see things we don't want to & we know our local MPD won't respond to our calls. We've tried. HEY NBC15 why not interview those of us who try. Ask us our stories & for copies of the police reports that nothing is done with. You report the bad why not follow through with the aftermath? Just wondering?

Posted by: Tony Location: Mazo on Jul 17, 2008 at 11:11 AM
I do work! And I did write from work on my break. Also, I do find that neighborhoods where adults are working, there is less violence. You don't hear of people stabbing or murdering each other in bishops bay, or other communities. It is always in the "dangerous" neighborhoods. The reason for that, is because people who live in "non-dangerous" neighborhoods are proud of what they have, and they contact the police. the cops cannot stop something if nobody calls! You walk into a nice neighborhood and start yelling or poushing someone around, the cops come because people call them. If the cops do not get a call until after someone is shot, stabbed, beat, how is it their fault that it happened? I do agree, maybe i was harsh about Green's daughter, but either way, she is an adult, so why put it in there that she had to leave her child alone??? She is an ADULT! I get left home alone all the time, I am 32!

The mayor and the Neighbor Association President have one job: Make Madison Look Good. They will do anything to promote business and anything that allows them to raise taxes. They don't work on problems and they don't care about our problems until it affects their pocket book. If you want them to do something, figure out how your problem is costing the city of Madison money or causing image problems. He does not care if someone gets murdered. When I contacted him a few years ago he said, "It is safer than other cities this size." And then he basically told me to shut up.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 09:12 AM
I have news for some of you. Police do not go into areas where the crime rate is real high. It has nothing to do with race or financial status. It is because they believe that the residents don't care. The proof of this is that parents don't control their kids, adults socialize with criminals, everybody looks the other way and spends all their time feeling sorry for themselves. "Somebody should...." I am glad that you are all making an effort with those areas. But for the rest of the city and surrounding communities we have to say, "You are not an island. Good people drive through that area. You don't have the right to trash a part of the city where people are afraid to live. You, the residents, are responsible for your own HELL! You simply don't have the right to be so trashy! There are other people in the world besides YOU!"

I live in this neighborhood read the interveiw on Channel 3000 news from the Neighbor Assoc Presid he says that it's better than it was. Really!! From when & what is it better. In the last 6 yrs I've lived here there have been numerous violent crimes & he said the drugs & prostitution have gone "INSIDE." So the 2 Jane's that walk the corner from about 5 pm on are inside huh? They've even tried to open our car door when we turn the corner to go home. He is such an idiot. The funny part is we've called the MPD & they say there isn't anything they can do. I seriously hope the city gets a grip on it soon or it WILL GET WORSE! I feel bad for the people who live in the neighborhood because that is all they can afford. Hey! I will stand at the corner with you all to get the trash out. Maybe we should picket the street every day until the city hears us. Name the date, time, & sign to bring. For crying out loud there is a public sprinkle park & school there. Our children deserve better.

I find it humorous that people are writing in (during the work day) to criticize others for being home during the day- suggesting that they are jobless deadbeats. Are people writing in from home (and do not have a job?) or writing from work? 'Just curious!

to Tony: you can't automatically conclude Green's daughter doesn't have a job. maybe she does and works 3rd shift. thought of that? and just b/c the more people work doesn't mean the less of a chance that killings will occur.

Posted by: Tony Location: Mazo on Jul 16, 2008 at 01:03 PM
How come Green left her 18 yr old daughter at home alone....why wouldn't she? Green should get her daughter a J-O-B! You want the neighborhood safe, quit blaming cops and stand up to the thugs that are running oyur neighborhood!

The victim was a woman. The PD says the community is safe, but if you're a woman you really aren't. Women are most at risk in the home, not from some guy jumping out of the bushes. How sad for her.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 16, 2008 at 12:08 PM
I think we should build a fence around our racist friend- domestic fights AND domestic deaths do NOT only happen in neighborhhods with a high crime rate- Lacy Peterson? What about the woman who was killed by her husband on her honeymoon scuba diving? By the way- Simpson Street is NOT only a block away from Badger. I hope you can attend the next southside neighborhood meeting and help these people who want to live in a good, clean neighborhhod. It is not just adult "crooks"- many children live there, too and saw what happened yesterday.

Susan, I think Amazed point was we are always told we are safe. But apparently the woman killed wasn't safe. And I wouldn't take it as complaining but, pointing to the fact that we frequently get a false sense of security. Who would think they would be robbed at Woodmans in broad daylight?

Hey Susan - Must of hit a nerve! You're missing the point while you're making your accusation. I'm not complaining. I'm saying if someone believes there's no threat simply because of a news story, they are also the ones to believe the government will take care of them just because the government says they will.

Being someone who grew up off Park st. and then Allied dr. many decades ago. I remember a time where these areas had a great sense of pride and respect for their community. It saddens me to see people not caring about the neighborhoods they are living in and landlords that don't feel it's necessary to make the necessary repairs and follow up with numberous resident complaints. It will take more than a residental "facelift", changing the names of a few streets and evicting the current residents that will not fit the proposed atmosphere the new targeted neighborhood. If all goes to deaths ears, we can be sure that Allied and Park St. will end up in a neighborhood near you.

To Sara: "area in question is having some problems right now." How old are you? 10 years old? Badger Road has been a toilet for the last 40 years. If you are a criminal, if you do drugs, if you are violent or don't have a job, you probably live on either Badger rd., the former Simpson St. (a block away), on Allied Drive or the white colored apartment buildings in Fitchburg. In my opinion they create their own problems, can't stay clean and sober, steal things to make a living, suck off the welfare system, and steal license plates for money. I think we should build a fence around the bad areas in town and let them destroy their lives in private. I am sick of reading about them and sick of thinking, "Well, what did you expect out of life when you practice being a piece of trash!" Wake up and smell the coffee you trash!

Amazed, if the suspect and dead person were in a relationship, and they were fighting, and one killed the other, why should the police lie and say there IS danger to the community? Oh, I know, because then you wouldn't have anything to complain about.

You know, this isn't the doing of "illegals being pushed off into the community" or the work of liberals (or conservatives). Unfortunately, the area in question is having some problems right now. I'm not going to deny it- I was over on Badger Rd. about a month or so ago and it was like being in an episode of "The Wire". I do, however, think that we're approaching the problem in a less than effective manner. Yes, we absolutely need more police in the area- there's no question of that. We also need to look at what's happening with the people who live there and see if there's not something going on that also needs to be addressed. Taking a more holistic approach will prove to be more effective in the long run than kicking everyone out of the area. The ones who are making problems will just make more problems unless the deeper issues are addressed. So save the finger pointing at liberals, conservatives, "illegals", and whomever else and start looking at a real way to solve this.

I know a lot of people who live on this street. Believe it or not- many of them have been born in this country.

Hey George, Being so close to the Police department one would think they could solve this one. But then again when you have cops on the force as some of these guys who think people who sit at a cubicle all day are pathetic. What could one expect?

This is why the liberals are all going to regret some of their decisions. The pushing off illegals into the community, the no background check rule on tenants, and the idea all criminals are non-violent. Madison is falling apart and I would not be the type to say, "told ya so." It is only going to get worse. Why don't we put another 21 million into Allied, another genius idea by the do-gooders!

There's never a danger to the community, and never a threat to anyone. The people that believe that line are the ones that believe the government will take care of them.

What a surprise? Violence in that part of town? What are the odds, and in the right armpit of the town? (Allied is the left). Sounds like Badger is long overdue for some cleaning up too!

Yet another serious crime in the arm pit of Madison. One block from the Police Department and the probation/parole office.
