According to a news release sent out by Lori Berquam, Dean of Students.

MADISON - The University of Wisconsin-Madison campus community is mourning the deaths of three of its students in a Midvale Boulevard car accident early Wednesday.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of three members of our campus community," says Dean of Students Lori Berquam. "The timing of this tragedy, just as we're about to start a new semester, hits us all particularly hard."

"ODOS offers our deepest and sincerest sympathies to all those who knew, attended class or worked with Lindsey Plank, Richard Putze and Daniel Myers," Berquam says. "In particular, our thoughts go out to their parents and families, during this time of grief."

The Madison Fire Department said a car crashed into a tree at 215 S. Midvale Blvd., near the intersection of Midvale Boulevard and Hillcrest Drive, at about 1:45 a.m.

One of the victims was pronounced dead on the scene. Two others were taken to UW Hospital and Clinics, where both of them later passed away.

The students have been identified by the Dane County Coroner as:

- Lindsey Plank, 23, of Madison. Plank was a senior majoring in chemistry.

- Richard Putze, 22, of Madison. Putze was a senior majoring in chemistry.

- Daniel Myers, 22, of Madison. Myers was not enrolled for the fall semester, but had this summer completed his degree requirements for graduation with a major in music performance, with a piano specialty.

"The UW chemistry community is devastated by this loss," says Professor Robert Hamers, chair of the Department of Chemistry. "In addition to being chemistry majors, Lindsey and Richard volunteered their time and energy to assist with lecture demonstrations. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all the family and friends of all three students."

UW-Madison has resources available to the campus community, including individuals or groups, who have been affected by the tragedy.

It is so sad, even the smart kids/adults make stupid choices, most of us have been guilty of making the same decision to drive after drinking at some point in our lives, I tell my kids have a designated driver and think prior to drinking, once you drove to the bar and start drinking at the time to leave you are no longer in a state of mind to think clearly-so please think about it before you have your first drink and make arrangements for a sober ride home, I knew Rick and his family and I know they must be devastated and I think about my own son who was friends with Ricks brother John and I just hope and pray alot he will make good choices-which at 17 he has not so far.

All I know is that I will puke if they posthumously award this killer's degree to him after he killed himself in an illegal act, then took the life of a promising chemist, and a promising musician who had valuable contributions to make to society! If the UW system awards or conferrs a degree upon him, I will puke, then I will make sure every media outlet around the nation knows that the UW thinks murderers deserve degrees after they die by their own hand!

Hey, John Putze- Your brother was a drunk driving murderer. just thought someone should bring you to the reality we all are enjoying here in Madison. we didn't have to see the accident scene to see that your alcohol drinking moronic brother was a guilty as sin intoxicated killer who murdered two people! Make sure when you rip on people in the future, you put in your comments that you're the brother of a drunk driver who commited a double homicide by his selfish act!

Cherie- so... when, at what age exactly, does a person become not "Too young to die such a tragic way."? 25? 30? 50? what limit on age can you say someone is not "too young to die"? And, if they're not "too young to die", shouldn't we be sending THEM to war instead of promising young people who haven't started families yet? shouldn't we be sending 40 & 50 year old parents & grandparents to war to die, so the "young" can live until they aren't "too young"? Sorry Cherie, I understand you're hurting, I lost my brother in an accident, but you aren't making any sense. no one is ever "old enough" to die.

Katherine from New Berlin- Who the hell are you to tell Mandi what she does, and does not need? John's own posting says "Learn some facts, bud" so she was asking, and she asked him because he was sure to mention he was at the scene, so a definite source of good information. She was just doing what the brother told people to do, so where do you get off being the mother protector/ moderator- regulator of what people need/ should ask? Get over yourself already, Freak!maybe Mandi is trying to discount rumors she heard, but unless John comes through, the rumors make more sense instead of his version of things? whatever- make your own comments, and don't worry about what other people are asking for, and why!

Mandi - why the need for facts? You're asking a guy to give details on his brother's death? I don't know why you need to have any "facts" to assess anything. It was a horrific accident. My dad was killed in an a terrible accident and it's painful to have to re-tell the details. Let's let them remember their loved ones the way they were - not focus on a few horrible moments before they were pre-maturely taken. My most heartfelt thoughts and prayers with the families... I am at a loss for words.

John- so help us out with some facts then- given the damage to the car, how long were the skid marks before he hit the tree? if he swerved to avoid something, where do the skids go from pointing downhill to four individual tracks turned sideways and how many feet did they slide diagonally from a straight line down the street to impact with the tree? I wasn't there, so I am just asking, so I can have some facts.

Anne - Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. We appreciate your thoughtfulness is this very difficult situation.

No matter wat the situation was. I lost family member as well as two other failies. Have some respect for us. All three were to young to die such a tragic way.

Keep who's mouth shut? Were you there? I'm the drivers brother. Thanks for the disrespect bud. I don't know if you were at the scene of the crash or not, but I was. This crash looks like he was avoiding something. No one drives straight into a tree. So how about you learn some facts bud and shut YOUR mouth

umm...sometimes people know more than what the news media tells you, so you keep your mouth shut.

This is a tragic event, but if this hadn't happened in Madison, would there really be so much extensive coverage of a car accident? How many other horrible accidents have happened recently outside of the Madison area that weren't mentioned?

If you read the other Updated story it states alcohol as a factor is being investigated. This is truely a loss.

Anon @ 3:35pm: Where does it say this is alcohol related? Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely NO patience or sympathy for drunk drivers but no where in this or the other story does it say this was alcohol related. Please don't make it harder for the families to deal with this tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased. I am so sorry for your loss.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 27, 2008 at 06:36 PM
How do you know it was alcohol? It could have been anything. I wouldn't jump to conclusion yet as it can hurt the family.
