REPORTER: Chris Woodard

It's a situation that understandably has many on campus worried because sometimes even the best laid plans can't compete with a gun.

It's a well used path cutting through the UW campus and bringing hundreds of students to their destinations. It's also the latest spot they're getting mugged.

Student Mark Nygren says, "It's a little bit scary. It's unnerving."

Early Wednesday morning a UW student and staff member were walking the path when they were confronted by a man with a gun. He took money from one of the victims and fled.

Madison Police Spokesperson Joel DeSpain says, "Sometimes they're fairly easy targets. They're walking around down there seemingly unafraid because they should be."

That sense of security may be quickly fading. Suspect sketches show striking similarities in several campus armed robberies. Police believe as many as 12 could be related and students are taking notice.

Nygren says, "I don't carry my wallet around as much unless I need to. I just carry my keys and my phone so I don't have my credit card because that's a pain to go through."

A program providing trained volunteers for students to walk with is one of many aimed at keeping them safe. The school also offers free bus and cab rides.

The campus even has a recommended path to walk called the lightway. It's well lit. It's near busy roads and it's lined with emergency phones. The problem is the path can't get you everywhere.

Student Lisa Papiernik says, "I usually do try to walk in groups when it's dark or when it's later because I'm just to scared to walk at night because I know anything can really happen."

For several on this campus that frightening reality has already proved true.

These suspects are still at large and police are looking for any information that will help them catch the men they believe are responsible.

UPDATED 11:55 a.m.
Wednesday, October 8, 2008 --- 8:35 a.m.

Two victims were walking together on the bike path near Charter when they were confronted by the suspect. The suspect displayed a handgun, took money from one of the victims and fled. The second victim did not have any money on his person.

Neither victim was injured during the incident.

The perpetrator was seen getting into the passenger side door of a dark blue Buick or Cadillac. It had tinted windows, with chrome strips along both sides, and on its rear bumper.

MPD detectives will look to see if this robbery might be connected to others that have occurred in the area.

Suspect:
The perpetrator was an African-American male, 6'0-6'02 in height and weighing 200 to 240 lbs. The suspect was last seen wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, dark blue pants and a black baseball cap with the letters 'NY" in front in white. He's described as having "bulging eyes", dark black bushy eyebrows, and a very defined jaw line.

Let me tell you a story. When I was 7, my father worked nights and my mom was home alone on the farm with us kids. A man knocked on our door at 2am. He said his car had broken down and needed to come in to use our phone. My mom told him she would make the call for him but she wasnt letting him in. I looked out the window and saw his car on the road and the engine was running just fine so I whipsered that to my mom. What I didnt see was that she was already holding a hand gun out of sight behind the door. But after I told her his car was running, she held up the gun and said, "I think you better leave". The man ran down the drive was and sped away in his "broken down" car. Even at 7 I knew this man was scum and I would have killed him myself if he had touched my mother. However if this guy had approached my mom while she wasnt on our property, she wouldnt have been allowed to have that gun to protect herself and me. Thats pathetic. I will protect myself and mine the way I see fit.

As a former copper I understand where both Joseph and "Upset Cop" are coming from. Upset Cop: I've been there brother, you raise good points. It got to the point with me that I figured the pro's outweighed the cons you bring up...and they are valid concerns. You have the right idea for sure if you see one with a gun no matter who. With all due respect, I was willing to take the chances if that's what will protect people. Joseph, I wish there were more people like you. There is power in numbers. Our fouders and those in the American revolution made far more sacrifices than we are willing today. Nobody wants to lose their house, car, money, whatever. Our founders sacrificed far more than our toys we hold so dearly. I don't have all the answers, but know that sooner or later we will have to fight. If not us, who? Our leaders are exploiting us by allowing our laws and courts to be used against us. Why? Are they trying to turn us into Europe? A 3rd world nation? I don't know!

Josh, you're not comparing like situations, and your example reads like the thought process of a, well, a 3rd grader. There is a huge difference between someone raping or beating someone, and someone willing to protect themselves from serious attack. To anon @ 0811, what I hope for you is that if you are ever in a dangerous situation, that someone like Joseph chooses to help you anyway.

I am no in favor of Concealed Carry. Its too hard in states where they have it for cops to figure out who should and who should not be carrying. If I see a gun, all it is to me is a gun. Its not a gun being carried legally, illegally, by a trained or untrained person. If it looks like a gun, it is a gun and its going to get the appropriate attention. If this means an honest citizen gets my gun in the face, so be it. Doesn't mean I'm going to pull the trigger, but if their reaction isn't correct, i.e. following my commands to a T, they're going to get shot. This is something I don't want with me the rest of my life. I just know if I see a gun, I treat it like something that can kill me every time I see one. I'm not going to think, "Gee I'm sure that person has a CCW permit." and then wait to see what happens. No one is going to have to explain to my family I'm in a wood box because I thought said gun holder had a CCW permit. Its just easier for cops as it is now.

I'm all for concealed carry as well. I'm also in favor of the mandatory training classes that many states require people to take before receiving a permit. Unfortunately too many of the people that support CC give it a bad name. Every group has them.

So just because you can pay the fine means you can break the law? What sense does that make? So, if someone has enough time on their hands and money to pay for a lawyer raping or beating someone is ok with you Joseph? You may think you are intelligent but your explaination and thought process is that of a third grader. Who called you a name outside of a criminal, which if you are carrying a gun, you are just that. Breaking the law is breaking the law, no exceptions!

When I walk my dog I carry a can of mase. That way any strange dog (not friendly), person (not friendly) that comes up to us will get it in the face.

Posted by: Joseph on Oct 9, 2008 at 10:05 AM
I dont need a permit to carry a weapon...I make enough money to pay the fine. A peice a paper is not going to stop me from protecting myself. Its worth the $750 fine to have peace of mind. If its not for you, thats your decision and I respect that. Mine is to protect myself. But once again, someone who disagrees with me has called me a name because they lack the ability to be able to have a discussion with out name calling and childlike responses. Last time I checked I was an adult, not in the 3rd grade.

Dear people of the internet.....So much bashing, so much correcting of meaningless things....Perhaps find a hobby, beacause in reality your ego may feel bigger when bash/correct people. BUT I have news for you while your walking around feeling proud, the person you bashed is far over it by the time you even type your first word.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 9, 2008 at 09:27 AM
Dear Anon at 3:58. You got the point, but way to be a an internet english teecher!

Posted by: amazed Location: dane county on Oct 9, 2008 at 09:12 AM
I support concealed carry. It may not have helped in this case, but the victims should have had the legal right to protect themselves had they chosen to do so. We all should have the legal right to carry a weapon if we choose.

Posted by: anon Location: madison on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:11 AM
So joseph, you carry a gun now? That makes you as much a criminal as the rest of these punks. Hope you get pulled over and caught! You are no better than these people. And if you do, there goes your chances of ever getting a permit if it should happen.

Posted by: D Location: Madison on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:06 AM
Thanks Joseph, I really hope you get that opportunity. Maybe these punks will think twice before committing their next crime. Concealed carry, make it happen! The criminals already carry, why can't honest citizens?

Stopping going to the bars on Tuesday night!!!...I am so glad I did not come with you guys!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 9, 2008 at 02:22 AM
Its funny that you bring racism up because no where in any of the comments is race stated.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 8, 2008 at 09:19 PM
By the way, when did joseph say anything about race? Talk about racism.... look in the mirror. So sick of the race card, put it away.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 8, 2008 at 09:16 PM
On the rare occasion I travel to Madison, I to carry a gun. I will not hesitate to pull it on anyone who threatens harm. Sounds dumb to post on an internet board, but maybe it will save some stupid persons life. I will NOT live my life in fear.

Posted by: Toby Location: Madison on Oct 8, 2008 at 07:04 PM
Racism is the last refuge of cowards - that would be you Joseph. Any concealed weapons ordinance passed would be utilized by the majority of Black Madisonians, for we are a majority law abiding people, believe it or not.

Posted by: anonymous Location: madison on Oct 8, 2008 at 03:58 PM
anonymous @ 11:14, let's hope being able to spell correctly is not a prerequisite to obtain a CONCEALED weapon permit. Thats what scares me the most, people who have little education being able to carry a gun!
