Good one "J". this kid is my younger brother and he's not an idiot. he shot someone who was breaking into my house. he's also taken hunters safety so it's not like he's running around with a bb gun shooting everything in sight, he knew what he was doing even if it wasn't the best thing to do. he should have called someone but he still kept a cool head and I think that deserves some respect.

Posted by: Darby Location: Madison on Oct 13, 2008 at 07:59 PM
The kid is 13 years old, his name is jack. he goes to my school. and seriously, everybody, he's got guts to do that. i'm proud to say he's my friend and that he's still alive. so everybody who says he should have called the police needs to buzz off. u'd be so scared u might not even be able to move!!!! He was/is smart!!!! so shut up!!!

Posted by: Darby Location: Madison on Oct 13, 2008 at 07:50 PM
WAY TO GO JACK!!!!! I strongly disagree with anyone who tries to tell me this was bad, and/or we shouldn't encourage him!!!!

I agree with Anonymous @ 11:57- we should outlaw all guns of any kind... after, you can cause more horrible, disable, debilitating, paralyzing pain with a bat run through with nails, or a bow and arrow, or a hatchet, or a chain run through with nuts and bolts... so who needs guns, eh anon? a kitchen knife, a ball peen hammer, a wrench, a 2x4, a woman's purse/ handbag with rhinestone decorations, a set of house keys, an old style car antenna, a piece of cable with a large weight at the end of it, an electrical cord (the coice of child abusers/ murderers in Portage, I believe), anything pushed with sufficient force into any body orifice like a broomstick, a pencil, a wooden spoon, a vegetable peeler through the eyes into the brain, dog leashes, choke collars, belts around the neck, dress ties, suspenders, pantyhose around the neck, shopko necklaces, clothesline wire, piano wire, kite string, dental floss, shoestrings, yep, better outlaw 'em all! have you caught the sarcasm yet?

Great job kid!! Way to go!! Now if Obama gets in office, no one will have guns of any kind. And Anon @ 11:57 you're an idiot!!

Good one Dave at 5:25, I'll laugh for a week at your "solution".

Posted by: carma on Oct 10, 2008 at 07:43 PM
didn't say how old/young the kid was, kids are old enough to stay home at 13 for a short period and as they get older for longer periods of time. Good job to the boy.

Violence never solves anything. Ever. This kid should have asked the burglar why he was so desperate for money and perhaps offered him to use his computer to find a Job that would pay him. That is what Jesus would have done.

if we let oj into office, none of us will have the priviledge of owning a gun to defend ourselves. as bad as mcsame is, at least he has ties to the nra, and we'll have some chance of being able to still bear arms.

yeah who the heck writes these?? some of these stories are horrible. What time of day? says 8.20pm, on the 1000 block of Sherman. but what day? i assume Thursday...

"J", breaking into someone's home is illegal, too. Give the kid some credit. Now we have 2 crooks who will probably think twice about breaking and entering. If the kid had called 911 first, he could have been killed waiting for police. It took him seconds to stop the threat. It would take minutes for the police to arrive.

Props to the young man to stand up to these guys but thank god the robbers weren't armed with real guns!! Could have been a bad ending for the kid. It is so sad how many young men are attempting to rob homes these days. Honestly, is it REALLY worth it?? Come on!! Madison is really becoming way too crime filled for me... i'm outta here ASAP

Awesome job kiddo!!! Now, have your dad show you how to load, aim, & fire a .45 ACP and the next time these loser A-Holes try to break in one or both won't be feeing the scene of the crime. KUDOS!!!

Posted by: J Location: Madison on Oct 10, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Should we really be encouraging this kid? Next time he might accidently shoot his father or sister. Firearms including BB Guns are illegal for minors, except with adult supervision, which this kid clearly didn't have here. He should have called 911, first thing, what parent doesn't teach their child that?

Posted by: Mary Location: Monroeville,Alabama on Oct 10, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Just wondering why the child was left home alone by himself? Great job for protecting himself!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Madison on Oct 10, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Gun's of all kind should be outlawed.

The movie is called Armed and Innocent.

Kudo's Kidd, wonderful job defending your self and your family. Your parents, sister should be very proud and thankful of you. You showed great courage, even though you were freighten. It's sad when a child can do something to deter these thugs, while our Court system fails us by giving the thugs nothing but little pats on the hands, no even slaps any more. People it's not our law enforcement letting us down, it's our court system. If you don't believe me, go sit in a court room and see for yourself, it's a joke. One that has become knowledge throughout other states, gangs, crooks, etc... which is why they are coming here to make their money. How sad of a city we have become, due the corrupt politician we ourselves have placed in our states government. It's time to clean house not only in our Nations capitol, but,in our own state too.

Good for him! Too bad he couldn't hit the guy in an eyeball... would have made identifying him a little easier, and then his prison nickname could have been "tinky winky". kind of a shame he didn't have the presence of mind to call 911 first, instead of his sister, but hey, he still got 'em, ad that is going to be one sad punk when he has to explain why his shoulder hurts... duh, cause a kid shot me when I broke into his house!Hey, kid's dad, better buy more BB's! I think the marksman might just need 'em to keep the cattle rustlers off the farm there on Sherman ave!

Posted by: anon Location: madison on Oct 10, 2008 at 09:38 AM
yes that would be nice to know so we can keep an eye out in a particular area!

Posted by: Anon Location: Madison on Oct 10, 2008 at 08:28 AM
Didn't they make a movie about this a few years back???

Posted by: Susan on Oct 10, 2008 at 08:28 AM
Info on time of day would have been nice too. It's scary that these guys are now breaking into occupied homes.

Posted by: amazed Location: dane county on Oct 10, 2008 at 08:27 AM
WOW! Can you imagine how frightening that must have been? And he still thought about protecting himself and his home!! Great job young man!!!

Posted by: Harry Callahan Location: Madison on Oct 10, 2008 at 08:18 AM
Good job son. Now you need to get a real gun. You can get a pretty nice shotgun for a decent price. Also, if you shoot someone trying to break into your house or are already in your house, shoot to kill and say they yelled they had a weapon.

Posted by: Koolaid Location: Verona on Oct 10, 2008 at 07:27 AM
That is a good kid.
