Community Still Reeling from Tragic Day

But instead of watching the homecoming game that had been scheduled, they mourned the loss of Principal John Klang, who was
shot to death by a student in school earlier in the day.

Instead of watching the Silver Eagles play football, they cried, sang ``Amazing Grace,'' listened to mournful violin passages and spoke fondly of Klang and also of a student who died early today in an unrelated car wreck.

Many wore Weston High sweatshirts and baseball caps in the cold late September wind. Bible passages were read and words of comfort
spoken.

The flag at the opposite end zone flew at half staff.

Klang and cusodian Dave Thompson were praised as heroes who prevented greater bloodshed.

Authorities say Thompson confronted the shooter as he entered the school and wrestled a shotgun away from him, but the shooter then pulled out a pistol and Klang managed to wrestle the weapon away even after being mortally wounded.

Becky Jennings is the mother of children who attend the school and she says the vigil was meant to offer hope and prayer to a grieving community.

It was a double tragedy at the high school today.

Shortly before a student walked into Weston High School in Cazenovia and shot the principal, another student died in a car crash.

Sheriff's authorities say the crash that killed the 16-year-old student was unrelated to the shooting.

Sheriff Randy Stammen says a deputy on patrol was trying to catch up with vehicle to pull it over for a speeding violation several miles from the school. But, the vehicle crashed, killing the driver, who wasn't wearing a seat belt.

The sheriff's department says a passenger in the vehicle who was wearing a seat belt was not seriously injured.

Stammen says the student was medflighted to Madison where he was
pronounced dead.
