Man shot by Eau Claire officer identified

Police say Derek Kratlian refused to comply with repeated orders from a sergeant to put down the shotgun. Sergeant Gary Axness told investigators he then fired three shots when Kratlian turned the shotgun toward him.

Three shots hit Kratlian in the upper abdomen. He was pronounced dead at Luther Hospital.

Police say the man's shotgun was not loaded.

Axness says the incident began when he was conducting a traffic stop. He heard an argument in a nearby residence. The front door was open and the officer says he saw a man pointing a shotgun at another man.

Axness entered the residence and told Kratlian to drop the shotgun.
