Teacher fights in vitro dismissal in Appleton

Kelly Romenesko testified at a hearing before an administrative law judge in Appleton where she's challenging her dismissal.

Romenesko says then-principal Tony Abst offered that advice. She say she then went to her priest who told her she could keep teaching and go to church even though the procedure violated Catholic teachings.

Romenesko is a French teacher who asked for time off in September 2004 to complete the medical procedure. She told school officials the next month that she was pregnant. Five days later she was fired.

The school system claimed Romenesko violated a provision of her contract saying a teacher has to act in accordance with Catholic doctrine, which considers in vitro fertilization morally wrong.
