Time To Get Your Furnace Checked For Winter

Sun Prairie: Winter comes every year, but it still seems to surprise some people. However, there are a couple things you can do to save you from some headaches later on.

Action Plumbing and Air pays a visit to Karen Markstahler every fall to check her furnace. She says it's a good feeling to know her furnace has a clean bill of health. "If I can do the clean and checks and make sure everything is working properly before the heating season starts that makes more sense to me."

It's a busy time of year for Curt Johnson and his staff. People want to get their furnace checked before the first big cold spell. "We're doing probably 5 or 6 a day."

Curt says the most common problem is a cracked heat exchanger. "Probably 1 out of 10 clean checks that we do we find cracks."

That can have deadly consequences. "As this thing burns it burns carbon dioxide, then if it re–burns it, it creates carbon monoxide, which is what kills you."

Johnson says their fiber–optic camera lets them to a more thorough job. "This lets you really get up in there in cracks you just can't see."

Karen likes it too. "When I see something like that it makes it more real and I can understand things."

Another winter tip is one that will pay off in the spring. "90% of the calls in the spring are because people don't take their garden hoses off in October, November. If the garden hose is left on this water can't get away. When the water freezes it expands and cracks the pipe," says Johnson.
