Band competes, moves on from tragedy

The Chippewa Falls High School marching band finished fifth in their division at the Wisconsin State Marching Band Championships in Whitewater over the weekend.

It was about a year ago that a bus carrying the school's marching band members home from the Whitewater competition crashed into an overturned semitrailer truck on the road near Osseo. Five people on the bus were killed and 29 were injured.

The band of about 190 members finished fifth in their division yesterday at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. They finished third last year.

Principal Jim Sauter says the band's theme "Triumph of the Spirit" was the group's way of moving on while still paying tribute to the victims.
