The Department of Natural Resources reports Monday that preliminary counts show hunters killed 167,573 deer during the first 2 days of the season -- up about 6,500 from a year ago.
Wildlife officials say 72,245 bucks and 95,328 antlerless deer were registered.
The gun deer season continues through Sunday.
The agency also says the opening weekend of the hunt was among the safest on record with no fatal accidents and 3 shooting injuries.
DNR hunter safety coordinator Tim Lawhern says the 3 accidents all involved self-inflicted injuries.
More than 630,000 hunters combed fields and woods for the opening 2 days.
