More Madison Water Woes

Clean drinking water is something most of us take for granted.

And something the people in this room Monday night are concerned they won't have in the near future.

"It is a serious concern," said Faye Dremock, east side Madison resident. "We don't have enoug safe drinking water for the isthmus and we're continuing to add more and more infill in that areal, so where are we going to get safe drinking water for those people."

High manganese levels in Madison's drinking water have been an issue for the past year, but now the attention is turning to another threat ... carbon tetrachloride ... also known as carbon tet.

"My concern is what has been my and my family's lifetime exposure to the various pollutants that have been coming through well three?" said Ken Opin, east side resident.

Madison water officials say the carbon tet is only in well three, on the east end of the isthmus, and not found at dangerous levels in any other Madison well.

They also say the amount that was found in well three, was probably not high enough to make anyone sick.

"The levels we're seeing would not be a health concern unless there were much higher and consumed over a much, much longer period of time," said David Denig-Chakrof, Madison water utility.

Still, carbon tet is a cancer causing chemical.

Usually used as a cleaning solution, experts say high levels in drinking water can be dangerous.

And the Madison water utility has shut well number three down.

But the need is still there and now the city is hoping to drill a new well for Madison's east side.

And the residents at this meeting are hoping that will solve what is becoming a serious problem.

"Water's so fundamental and it's something that you take for granted," said Satya Rhodes-Conway, east side resident. "People just want to know that it's OK to drink the water."
