Marine From Wisconsin Rapids Area Killed in Iraq

A 19-year-old Marine from the tiny Wood County community of Vesper has been killed in Iraq.

The Pentagon says Lance Corporal Jesse Tillery died Saturday from wounds suffered during combat in Al Anbar province. According to the military, his unit is working in conjunction with Iraqi forces.

Tillery, a 2005 graduate of Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids, was assigned to the Second Assault Amphibian Battalion of the Second Marine Division. It's part of the Second Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Military officials say Tillery, who was single, joined the Marines in August 2005 and was a crewman on an amphibious assault vehicle. He was deployed to Iraq in September.

Tillery is the 63rd Marine or soldier from Wisconsin to die in Iraq since US troops invaded the country in March 2003 to topple President Saddam Hussein.
