Around 5:30 Tuesday morning, police say a man raped a woman in her home along Jana Lane on Madison's east side.
He came in through an unlocked door, and fled on foot.
"And we all know how cold it was outside," says Mike Hanson, with Madison police.
Despite the temperatures hovering around zero, the suspect took off with just jeans and a t-shirt on.
"We really need the community's help in this because it would be an anomaly to see a male in a t-shirt lurking around the building at 5:30 in the morning in this cold weather."
The suspect is described as a black man, between 20 and 25 years old, about 5'11" and heavy set.
He had on jeans and a red and white t-shirt.
"If crime like this is allowed to continue in the neighborhood, its' going to affect everybody," says Bob Schaefer.
He's a member of the Ridgewood Neighborhood association, which includes Jana Lane, and says the area is generally safe.
It's been so quiet lately, the association has scaled back its involvement, but an incident like this is likely to bring nieghbors together for the sake of safety.
"And certainly doing nothing about it won't make it go away."
