Cell Phone Towers At Madison Schools

Memorial and West High Schools may have a new addition.
Cell Phone Towers.

"this is something new for this school district but this is not something that is new on a national level or even in Milwaukee I believe that they have some cell contracts that they're renting space out from their school," says Madison School Board President, Johnny Winston Jr.

Johnny Wintson, Madison's School President says the new towers would bring revenue into the district, possibly some million dollars.

" we have a, definitely a serious situation with our financial picture in this district and we do need to look at some alternative revenue streams and cell tower leasing may be the way to do some things," says Winston.

Something residents like Kristine Lamont want to know more about, tonight she came to the public meeting to voice her concerns.

" I think we really need to look back at how we are getting revenue for the schools, it doesn't seem appropriate to constantly fund the schools under the rate of inflation it seems that we are just cutting our feet off and pulling out the rug for the kids now and the kids in the future," says Kristine Lamont.

Kristine's son will be going to Memorial High next year and says the towers could be a health risk.

" waves put off from it that would harm student learning would it effect their ability to have enough computer access would electricity be effected," says Lamont.

" this is a controversial issue, I think there's people that believe that cell waves could harm our students but I do believe we've come a long ways since the days of cell phone usage and I think they put some safeguards into place," says Winston.

The school board plans to review public comments, the next step will be looking at the contracts with U.S. Cellular, if you want to look at the contract you can log onto www.mmsd.org.
