A Marine helicopter pilot from West Bend is dead in Iraq, only weeks after beginning his second deployment there.
He's 27-year-old Captain Kevin Kryst.
The Defense Department says he died yesterday from injuries sustained in fighting in al-Anbar province.
His mother, Elizabeth Kryst, says her son died after he was hit by a mortar fragment.
Kryst was a 1997 graduate of West Bend West High School and a 2001 graduate of UW-Madison.
His mother says he took basic training while in college, and became active in the Marines after graduation. She says his first deployment in Iraq was in 2004.
He's also surived by his father, Glenn Kryst, and 4 younger brothers and a younger sister.
Elizabeth Kryst Kevin's great-grandfather had been a Marine and it was always something her son wanted to do.
