"Artillery shells. We have them priced very well at only 8 dollars," stated Krystalynn Cornellier as she walked around her fireworks tent a few miles west of Cambridge on Highway 12. "We have a big assortment of packs like this. They come with double shots and triple shots."

And all of them are illegal unless you get a license, which is now easier to get. According to state law a firework that leaves the ground or explodes is illegal to shoot off unless you have a license. And with the new budget signed on Monday dealers can now legally issue those licenses directly to their customers.

"It is something that firework sellers have been requesting for a number of years," said Assistant Attorney General Dennis Krueger. "There has been litigation about it. There has been legislation about it. They were able to affect the change this year and the governor signed it into law."

But before you light that fuse first check with your local government. Because they have the right to regulate fireworks as well.

In Madison for example only snaps, snakes, sparklers, caps and party poppers are allowed. If you are caught using anything else you can be fined between $172 and $1000.

"If they don't agree to sign the paperwork we can't sell the fireworks to them," added Cornellier.

That paperwork, or license, allows you to fire any firework at various sites around the state. The closest to our area is the Columbus 151 Speedway on July 4 and Labor Day.

"If they don't like that then we can't sell them the fireworks," she concluded.

Four teams of Madison police and fire prevention officers will patrol the city this week to respond to noise complaints and issue citations to anyone violating city firework laws.
