UPDATED Wednesday, February 13, 2013 --- 11:32 a.m.

Press Release from the Rock Co. Sheriff's Department:

On 02/13/13 at 5:24am, Deputies from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office along with, Green County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, Evansville Police, Evansville Fire and EMS and Brooklyn Fire, were dispatched to a two-vehicle traffic accident with injuries on W STH 59 approximately .2 of a mile east of N STH 104.

Units began arriving at 5:27am and found a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville in the south ditch, approximately 15ft off the roadway, with heavy front-end damage and a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu on its passenger side in the middle of the roadway. The male driver and one male passenger were trapped in the Malibu and the male driver of the Bonneville was also trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency crews began extricating all three subjects and found the driver of the Malibu was unresponsive. Emergency crews requested the UW-Hospital Med-Flight to respond for the injured parties and began life saving measures on the driver of the Malibu.

Life saving measures were unsuccessful and the driver of the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene by Med-Flight doctors. The passenger of the Malibu was transported to UW-Hospital by Med-Flight with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Bonneville was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Initial investigation of the scene shows the Malibu was traveling westbound on W STH 59 approaching a large sweeping curve in the road near N STH 104 when it entered the north shoulder of the curve. After traveling on the shoulder the driver corrected and the vehicle began to rotate counterclockwise. The vehicle continued rotating and began to travel sideways into the eastbound lane of traffic. The Bonneville was traveling eastbound and collided with the front passenger side of the Malibu. This caused the Malibu to overturn and come to rest on its passenger side and the Bonneville to enter the south ditch.

The driver of the Malibu was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident and speed is believed to be a contributing factor in this accident.

The names of all parties involved will not be released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The Rock County Accident Reconstruction Team arrived on scene to reconstruct the accident. The curved portion of W STH 59 was closed for approximately five hours but traffic was able to proceed through using the small frontage road to N STH 104.
