UPDATE: Packers event brings in 600 coats for needy kids

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- A Green Bay Packers charity event has brought in nearly 600 winter coats for donation to needy children.

The team's annual Coats for Kids collection took place Sunday before the Packers' win over Washington. Fans were asked to donate new and gently used winter coats.

The team says the event brought in 592 coats, as well as almost $15,000 in cash. Both figures are records, topping last year's totals of 440 coats and $13,000 in cash.

The event was led by the Salvation Army and a number of local dry cleaners.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers are inviting fans who attend this weekend's home opener to donate warm winter coats for needy children.

The team's annual Coats for Kids collection will take place Sunday, prior to Green Bay's game against Washington.

Fans are asked to donate new and gently used winter coats, which will be distributed to children through local Salvation Army units.

The Salvation Army will be collecting coats and cash donations in the parking lot and at each main entrance starting at 8 a.m. Collections will be accepted until kickoff.

Last year's effort brought in 440 coats along with $13,000 in cash donations.
