A police pursuit in Janesville ended in an arrest. Officer Karl Mikkelsen was investigating a theft complaint in the area of the 400 block of S. Ringold St. when he noticed a red Pontiac Sunfire traveling at a high rate of speed.
Officer Mikkelsen attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver, Alex Schenck, refused to pull over. Schenck drove through the neighborhood south of E. Racine St.
During the pursuit Schenck turned off his headlights, drove through stop signs, and speeds were in excess of 60 mph. Officer Mikkelsen ended the pursuit after three minutes and 1.7 miles, for safety reasons. A few seconds later, Schenck’s driving forced another Janesville squad in the area to take evasive action to avoid a collision and the squad ran off of the road.
Officers followed Schenck at normal speeds and lost him in the area of Racine St. and Palmer Dr. The vehicle was found unoccupied in the rear parking lot of Charlie’s Place Bar in the 2200 block of E. Racine St.
A perimeter was established and officers and a JPD canine tracked a single set of footprints. Officer Justin Popovich was in the 1700 block of E. Racine St. and saw Schenck emerge from a wood line where he was taken into custody. No one was injured and there was no damage as a result of the pursuit.
