Student Aims For Food Collection Record

Posted: Monday, February 4, 2013

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- A 16-year-old Fond du Lac student is leading an effort to break a world record for the most food donations in 24 hours.

Food for Freedom project members want to break the current record of nearly 559,000 pounds of food held by the North Carolina School of Science & Mathematics. The food collection event is set for Saturday, May 25 to Sunday, May 26 -- Memorial Day weekend at Fond du Lac High School.

Junior Daniel Loomans says there are a number of ways residents, businesses, group and schools can get involved, including hosting their own food drives. The Reporter says food pantries in Brown, Fond du Lac, Outagamie, Sheboygan and Winnebago counties will benefit.

Nearly 1,200 volunteers will be needed to cover the 24-hour collection effort.
