WASHINGTON (AP) -- There's a bit of a White House mystery. Not what's happening in it -- but under it. After nearly two years of noisy and costly construction, the White House Big Dig is finally wrapping up. Deep underground, whatever was built remains a secret. Officially, it was a utilities upgrade -- water and sewer lines and the like. But what reporters saw being built was a multistory structure requiring truckloads of heavy-duty concrete and steel beams. And whatever it is -- it isn't finished. Officials say the Big Dig was just the first phase of the project.


WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Scott Van Duzer is ready to take his presidential hug on the road. Van Duzer is the big guy who gave President Barack Obama a bear hug, when the prez visited Van Duzer's Florida pizzeria. Van Duzer days he'll campaign for Obama's re-election if he's asked. Van Duzer is a Republican who supports Obama. Van Duzer says he's getting some flak but a lot more support. He says people are phoning in orders from around the country, and having pizzas delivered to local police and firefighters, and shelters for pets and the homeless.


CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Monsters are on the loose at the University of Virginia. And students are responsible. The UVa students are learning how to create movie monsters. It's part of the Stan Winston Arts Festival of the Moving Creature. Winston was a famed special effects artist and a Uva alumnus. The monsters are made from things likes chicken wire, foam and plastic pipe. The Daily Progress reports those student-created creatures will be revealed today.


NEW YORK (AP) -- Calories count -- and Mickey D's will help you count them. McDonald's is putting calorie info on their menus. In case you're wondering, a Big Mac and medium fries have 920 calories. Add a 16-ounce Coke, and you're looking at more than 1,100 calories. The company says the move is voluntary, in order to educate customers. But some cities, like New York and Philadelphia, already require calorie postings.


SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities report a prison inmate escaped -- to a strip club. Investigators in South Carolina say they found Billy Hanna in a strip joint in Myrtle Beach. According to officials, Hanna walked away from his prison work release program. He was serving a five-year sentence for grand larceny. But Hanna could now be facing additional time. Investigators say new charges of check forgery and burglary are likely from his days on the run.


FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) -- Camille Cruz's purple violin is out of tune -- with her school district. Camille was told the colorful instrument isn't suitable for her sixth-grade orchestra class. Her mother, Sherry Lopez, says they were told to rent one of the district's more traditional violins for $30. Camille's a student at Tibbetts Middle School in Farmington, New Mexico. District officials tell a local paper (Daily Times) they hope to settle the issue soon. Purple is Camille's favortie color and the violin was a present from her grandmother.
