SUPERSTORM-USA TODAY SIGN
MCLEAN, Va. (AP) -- The A in USA is a victim of superstorm Sandy. As the storm pounded the Washington area yesterday, it knocked down the letter A from USA in the USA Today sign. The big letter had been on the newspaper's headquarters in McLean, Virginia, just outside the nation's capital. A spokeswoman says the letter fell on the headquarters' lawn and has been picked up. No one was hurt by the flying A.
SUPERSTORM BIRDWATCHERS
NEW YORK (AP) -- You not might think of birdwatchers as thrill-seekers. But some Manhattan birdwatchers were perched high above the Hudson River, as superstorm Sandy pounded the Big Apple. The birdwatchers hoped to catch a glimpse of exotic feathered creatures that normally live thousands of miles away. Lawyer Peter Scully says the tropical birds hitch a ride in the eye of the storm and drop out as a hurricane hits land. There's even a name for the hobby: storm-birding.
OBAMA'S IPOD
WASHINGTON (AP) -- What's on your playlist Mr. President? President Barack Obama is revealing what he has on his iPod. The music-lover-in-chief did an interview with Cincinnati radio station WIZF yesterday. Obama has wide-ranging musical tastes. Obama says the old school artists include Stevie Wonder, James Brown, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. More recent tracks are from Jay-Z, Eminem, and the Fugees. Jazz artists John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Gil Scott-Heron are also on the president's playlist. But there's one name Obama didn't mention, Bruce Springsteen. And The Boss has been out campaigning for the president's re-election.
STOLEN SIGNS
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) -- A Tennessee man might want to hire a decorator. Daniel Cross of Bristol is charged with decorating his house with stolen traffic signs. Police report spotting street signs nailed to the wall, when responding to a domestic incident. Authorities tell the Kingsport Times-News, Cross had 30 stolen signs, two traffic barrels and a couple of traffic cones. Cross says the signs were a gift from a friend.
WALNUT THEFT
LOS MOLINOS, Calif. (AP) -- This crime is nuts! Authorities in Northern California are investigating the rip-off of $300,000 worth of walnuts. That's more than 80,000 pounds. So far, sheriff's deputies haven't cracked this nut case. But they may have a serial nut-napper. Investigators believe the same person stole another load of nuts within a matter of days. Deputies tell the Record Searchlight of Redding they have a description of a possible suspect.
FAT DOG
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) -- Stay, Obie, stay. The hefty dachshund isn't going anywhere. Obie's been put on a diet by his new caretaker, Nora Vanatta. The belly-dragging hot dog had been up to 70 pounds, but Vanatta says he's dropped 15 of them. Now, Oregon Dachshund Rescue wants to take Obie away from Vanatta. The group claims she's exploiting the pooch for publicity. But a judge in Washington County, Oregon, ruled Vanatta can keep Obie for now. The judge says it's not clear who actually owns the dog.
