Wis. Spring Turkey Season Begins Next Week

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's spring turkey season gets under way next week.

The first of a half-dozen seven-day season periods begins Wednesday. Hunters killed 42,612 turkeys during the 2012 season, up 6 percent from the year before, and state wildlife ecologists say hunters might have even better luck this time around. Statewide surveys show the third-highest brood observation rate since 1987, helped largely by 2012's unusually warm spring and early summer boosting reproduction and brood-rearing conditions.

The state Department of Natural Resources made 234,765 permits available for this spring's hunts. More than 135,000 were awarded through the agency's annual lottery. The remainder went on sale over-the-counter on March 18.
