This year thousands of pets became sick and many died from contaminated pet food from China.
Last week vets reported that more than 220 actually died from eating the tainted food.
Wednesday, we begin a weekly look at Hot Trends and where you can find them in our area.
Christine Bellport has this week's Hot Trend of designer pet food.
It is not new that pet owners in the U.S. will spend millions every year on their beloved family members...what is new...what they are spending it on.
The trend is designer pet food. And we found it right here in Madison.
The minute you enter Tabby & Jack's on the west side, you notice this is a different kind of pet store. The food on their shelves and freezers range from organic to even raw!
Owner Michelle Lonergan says, "The reason why we carry several different lines is we believe that pets are as unique as we are and they have different palates."
But the reason goes even deeper than that, it is a profitable business especially now. Pet owners are looking for more assurances after this year's massive pet food recalls. All the food sold here is free of all biproducts.
Lonergan says, "Biproducts in a nutshell is anything that's left over after an animal has been slaughtered that is not suitable for human consumption."
Michelle says Pets will eat anything so it is up to the owner to be aware of what they are eating to keep them healthy. Much of the pet food is from the Midwest even one brand from Wisconsin.
It is located at Madison's Pet Corner of Watts Road ... an assortment of stores dedicated to pet care and health. Other shops include a pet portrait studio, a grooming salon, a luxury boarding facility and a full service vet clinic.
