Hot Trends: Staging

Posted: Thursday, July 9, 2009 --- 4:34 a.m.

We've seen programs on TV, homes for sale getting a make-over to make it look more appealing to a potential buyer.

And they're doing it right here in Madison.

In this week's Hot Trends, we look at what's called "Staging".

This house has what many in the area do not, the help of a professional stager to get it sold.

" When I put the house on the market I was getting a lot of feedback from prospective buyers that they really couldn't visualize what to do with all that space."

Lori's basement sat empty until she hired a professional stager.

" With the staging what it offers people is that if they are sitting with their property and its empty - its hard for people to come in and visualize what their furniture will look like in here and its hard for them to get a sense of the comfort"

Amy brought in furniture owned by her company to furnish the basement ...making it look lived in and comfortable.

They also can work with what you already have...

"if people do have furniture in their home which people are living there and still trying to sell, we offer help in that way too by rearranging the pieces that they do have by telling them to add a piece here and telling them what should be removed."

Amy says often times people have too much clutter or furniture is not placed well to create an open flow in a room, their goal is to make it easier for a potential buyer to connect with the home.

"I've always felt with the home it is an emotional connection as well as do they like the space are they at home in the space"

Another common mistake people make is they keep too many personal items up around their home.

Amy says clear that stuff out so a potential buyer can see themselves in that space.
