Hot Trends: Preparing Police Officers for the Streets

Thursday, August 27, 2009 --- 4:12 a.m.

We are hearing a lot about the flu season and how schools and companies will try to keep their people healthy.

The Madison Police Department is a step ahead, using a local gym to train and get their new recruits ready for life on the streets.

In this week's Hot Trends, the cost-cutting way to getting fit for the job and the fall season.

This may look like any other work out class, but these athletes are more than that, they are 22 new recruits with the Madison Police Department.

This intense 90 minute class, 4 days a week, gives these recruits some of the tools they will take with them out on the streets.

And it is a win-win for them and the Madison Police Department.

"In the long-run, it saves the company money in the long-run in workman's comp claims especially in the police department with as active as they have to be at certain times. It helps just that much better."

The focus is strength training with cardio vascular mixed in for endurance. The movements are designed, in this class, to mirror some of the quick moves police have to perform out on the streets.

More and more companies are hiring gyms like Orange Shoe to train their workers. Even employees who sit behind a desk will find working out beneficial - especially for low back pain.

This is the third year the Madison Police Department has used Orange Shoe to help train their new recruits.

The 4 month session wraps up in early October. And we wish these new recruits well.
