A woman who allegedly stole a purse in Madison was arrested Friday night.
The Madison Police department says they arrested Heather M. Dubeau, 39, for theft. Dubeau had been on a probation hold.
According to a release, it happened happened at about 10:30 p.m. at The Cooper's Tavern, 20 W. Mifflin St. Friday.
Police say the suspect lifted the purse from the back of a bar chair. Then, moments after the crime, the victim's boyfriend went outside and was able to track down the thief.
"She was trying to conceal his girlfriend's purse under her jacket, and there was soon a struggle for who would control it," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.
The boyfriend then tried to wrestle the purse from the suspect, while the suspect yelled she was being assaulted, according to a release.
The boyfriend of the victim was able to get the purse and the suspect was able to get away.
The victim and boyfriend gave a good description of the suspect to police, including that the suspect was wearing a sweatshirt with the name "Melanie" on the back.
According to a release, officers were on an unrelated call later that night when they came across a woman wearing the "Melanie" sweatshirt.
Dubeau denied to police that she was downtown earlier, but when told of the detailed information provided, she admitted to taking the purse.
