CrimeTracker 15: Suspected Thief Caught In Act

Posted Monday, January 5, 2009 --- 11:40 a.m.

Incident report from Madison Police Department:

Sunday morning, shortly after 2:00 a.m., a concerned citizen contacted police after seeing a man rummaging around in his car. The caller said it was parked in the driveway of his Heath Avenue home. He also indicated the suspect had been inside a neighbor's vehicle.

A responding officer got a suspect description from the caller and started cruising the neighborhood. He spotted the suspect inside another car, which was parked in a driveway in the 1900 block of Sheridan. The officer put a spotlight on the suspect and ordered him to stop. The suspect decided to take off.

The officer gave chase, but this proved difficult as sidewalks, driveways and other pavement were covered in a layer of ice. The officer fell several times, but stayed with the trail as additional officers arrived to make an arrest. The suspect indicated he had entered unlocked cars to steal change.

Joseph John Rist, age 34, Madison
Mr. Rist was arrested and tentatively charged with Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting an Officer.
