January 5, 2009, fugitive Joseph Benafield was captured and arrested in Florence, Alabama based on information developed by the Badgerland Fugitive Apprehension Squad (BFAS) and the Florence Police Department.
In September of 2006, the Wisconsin State Sex Offender Registry Personnel requested the assistance of the US Marshals Service in locating Joseph Benafield for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender in Green County Wisconsin. Benafield was convicted in 1996 in Green County for Second Degree Sexual Assault of a Child. This conviction required Benafield to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
The Badgerland Fugitive Apprehension Squad (BFAS) began the investigation of Benafield in September of 2006 and in December of 2008 information was developed that put Benafield's whereabouts in the Florence, Alabama area.
Contact was made by the Badgerland Fugitive Apprehension Squad to the Florence Police Department to relay the findings of the investigation and to direct the arrest of Joseph Benafield. Local PD officers in Florence immediately recognized Benafield, confirmed his whereabouts and took him into custody without incident.
