Magazine Scam in Madison

POSTED: Tuesday March 3, 2009 --- 10:30 a.m.

Police are releasing new information about a possible magazine sales scam in our area.

Police say a 47-year old man was the victim of fraud Monday, February 23.

The man told Madison Police he had been lured into the ruse as he looked to support Milwaukee's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center.

He said two magazine salespersons came to his door around 6:30 p.m.

They claimed proceeds would be directed to the community center. The man wrote a check for $154 worth of magazines.

He then contacted the community center, and learned there was no such fundraiser.

Around 7:15 p.m. the same night he got a call from a Madison check cashing business. An employee advised there was someone there trying to cash a check he had written for magazine subscriptions.

The man told the caller to confiscate the check, and he later picked it up.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTIONS:
Magazine salesperson #1: male, black, early 20's, 6'01", 190 lbs., brown eyes wearing tan winter hat, mustard colored coat, and a yellow striped tie he was carrying a Michigan driver's license.

Magazine salesperson #2: female, black, late 30's, 5'6", 180 lbs. she was carrying a Michigan driver's license.

who would be dumb enough to buy a magazine subscription from someone who comes knocking on your door? that is so rediculous. If i get a subscription i tear out the card from the magazine itself. thats how you get the best deals.Plus alot of times the subsriptions they sell when knocking on your door are any good magazines to begin with.(I wouldnt read half of them if they were free) then when they send you a renewal notice usually the price goes up so i let it expire. then they send a notice for the same price you got it for in the first place, or even a little cheaper.
