Posted Monday, July 20, 2009 --- 11:50 a.m.

From the Sun Prairie Police Department:

The Sun Prairie Police Department is investigating numerous reports of the theft of mail from mailboxes.

It appears that many mail boxes (20-30) were opened and mail was taken from them in the northwest residential area of the City of Sun Prairie.

Our investigation indicates that these thefts may have occurred on different days, with the mail being taken between 5-10pm.

Miscellaneous pieces of mail are being found in the area, and it is being returned to the owners.

The United States Post Office has been advised of the thefts. If anyone has information on this crime please contact the Sun Prairie Police Department at 608-837-7336 or the Tip Line at 608-837-6300.

Where in the story does it say out-going mail? This sounds like mail that was delivered by the Post Office to residents if its between 5pm and 10pm.

I guy I worked with was mailing his bills and an application for a credit card, and the mail was stolen from his mail box. The theives used the credit application with his name and social security number to steal his identity. The only thing I put in my out going mail are christmas cards.

I learned years ago that you should never put anything important in your mail box. No bills with checks, no applications that contain you personal account numbers and SS number. I always place my out going bills and documents in the secure locked mail boxes on the street, the post office, or use the mail service at work.

I hope the thieves can read. I'd like them to see I consider them scum of the earth for stealing.
