Incident report from Madison Police Department:
On Sunday afternoon, a 58-year-old Madison man was seated on a bench along Atwood Avenue when the suspect approached and asked if he could have a smoke. The man said he told him: "No, but they sell them at the store." The suspect then started to pummel the victim, punching him multiple times in the face and stomach.
Several citizens witnessed the attack, including employees of a nearby pizza restaurant and a passing motorist. One yelled at the suspect. He stopped the assault and fled.
Several citizens formed a group, and followed him. At one point he shoved a 33-year-old woman who was part of the pursuit team. He threw a punch at another.
One man held his arms down for a while, but he resisted to the point where he was eventually let go. The group remained vigilant and continued the track at a safe distance over the course of five to six blocks.
As officers arrived, they were able to identify a car in which he was now a passenger. An officer pulled it over. The suspect ran, but the officer chased him down.
The victim suffered several head wounds, but did not want to go to a hospital.
