Madison police credit a downtown bartender with helping them arrest a man who allegedly tried to steal a woman's purse.

The Paul's Club bartender saw the man trying to steal a purse from a woman at the bar Thursday night. The employee had recognized the suspect as a man who had been kicked out of the bar several times in the past.

When the man grabbed the purse, the bartender snatched it back, and tried to keep the suspect in the bar until the police arrived.

The man left Paul's Club, but the employee trailed him until police came and made the arrest.

53-year-old Jeffrey White was arrested for attempt to commit theft and unlawful trespass.
