Incident Report from the Madison Police Department:

Incident Type: Non-Residential Burglary

Incident Date: 01/12/2013 - 12:41 PM

Address: 2310 Crossroads Dr. (Special Olympics office)

Suspect(s): Male, white, "taller", wearing a dark coat and hat.

Victim: Special Olympics

Details: A Special Olympics staff member dropped by her Madison office, 2310 Crossroads Dr., Saturday afternoon and was surprised to find someone there, after all the office was closed for the weekend. The stranger was wearing a Torch Run jacket, something law enforcement officers are given for participation in the annual Special Olympics fundraiser. He told the employee: "It's okay; I'm with law enforcement and am running in the torch run." The woman thought this odd, and questioned the man about this, as no law enforcement officers would be just showing up at the office.

He became nervous and took off, not just with the jacket, but with a large Special Olympics Torch Run backpack, filled with items, as well as two Special Olympics tote bags. She watched as he walked into a nearby hotel. Police arrived, and the suspect could not be found; however, stolen Special Olympics property was recovered from bushes outside of the hotel.

The MPD is one of many state law enforcement agencies that participate in the charity, and since 1986 the Wisconsin's Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised over $19-million for Special Olympics.
